It's been a while...not that I haven't been out, I just hadn't had time to post .

In march I had another stunning WW1 outing (pics later) and today I decided to catch up on my training, so it was time to carve a netting needle...a WHAT!!! ..A Netting Needle!.. It's a simple litlle thing, great for making a net, but it actually involves a lot of different carving techniques (stuff you need for making a board, a spoon, a tent peg etc etc), so after honing my blade, it was time to get down to business and retire to the garden (on the 1st real nice day of the season)

In the pics you will see just one blade en one blade only and that is part of the excersise :).."one blade en and one blade only Vasiljeve" :brow:

Make a board:

Getting the basic shape:

First aid kit ready just in case...

Getting there:

And done:

So that's it..a bit of real old fashioned bushcraft..go out give it a try.. you'll get a chuckle out of it I promise  ..worst case scenario its a great way to store thread ......

except for just one small blister the first aid kit wasnt needed surprisingly enough.

hmmm a spork...interesting idea, i want to try and make a spoon anyway (but i need litle birch stems or a willow i can chop some bits off ..wrist size)

do you mean a spork with spoon on one end and fork on the other (thats the one i have in titanium) or a spork where the spoonbit also has fork bits? :chin:

It seems like a lot of work making all that RB, that all for the risk of cutting your finger? :P

After a lot of swearing I finaly figured out how to tie the knots for making a net...completely useless of course but it is at least proof of concept so i'm ahead in principle :P

Also started working today on another project: I picked up an old axe in France that I'm going to restore.

The handle I could just tap out and this is what I had to start with.

I decided to go for a sander in stead of an anglegrinder to get the rust of, partially since i didnt want it to look to machined and second since there is a mark stamped in the axe i want to keep..so after a fair bit of sanding...we now have this...

I've seen people soak old axes in vinegar for 24 hours then use a steelbrush, but vinager smells and i didn't have any ;)

Next steps, put the edge back on and find/fit a handle.

Yeah man — what crafting level are you at? Do you find these mats in lower-level areas or elite?

Do0d! Naval jelly, all day, every day. (OK, we can say phosphoric acid — we're all adults...)

hth, rock on, :rockin:

We have a saying that someone "has an axe to grind"

Just put a stick on it, and use it, the rust will come of nicely by it self ;-)
Similar as with rusty shovels :tease:

Sure, not necessarily marketed under the exact same name, though.

I'm pretty sure this is it here at Amazon in the UK. From Loctite but without the 'naval jelly' nickname.

There are others listed there, but they are strangely expensive, compared to here. (not sure why)

Oh.

I thought it was some obscene act involving jelly and Navels (belly buttons)...
