Re: Nativity Rant

Yup, teaching morals & ethics can be entirely separated from personal belief systems. And Church and State should always be separate, so that it's tolerant to all. But Xmas is the awkward one as it can be seen as a generic-midwinter-solstice-festival-tradition, and trying to call it "Winter...

Re: Recent coldweather spell in Europe.

I live within sight of the North Sea, and it's not gone below -2C here, thankfully. But dark mornings and a foot of snow really make me appreciate not having to go into work first thing. :sleepyblue: The media & public in the UK here are obsessed with "gritting roads" but then they do ...

Re: How has techonology improved/altered the way you live

[ wow - I am your lost twin, Hanno :D ] I agree that technology gets more efficient - it can evolve so fast but human brains must still have the psychological setup that they've inherited during the past 10,000 years. So it's always a case of new technology, same old problems. Real breakthroughs are...

Re: Disposing of an old laptop?

I usually take out the HD (just to be safe), and then donate the rest of the computer to a charity (they really can use computers). Without a HD, it's basically useless though. Aren't there plenty of software apps to wipe hard disks fully and completely, before disposal or donation ? Although, many...

Re: White Screen of Death?

Dunno about your WSOD (just how many colours are there ?!) but I've had problems with that Boot processors option before. From memory, it's documented as being "the number of cores used during boot", but I think I once tried setting it to 4 on a quad-core and then had random Windows (.NET?...

Re: My (perhaps) future pc specs

I completely agree about the PSU - find a high-quality one from a decent brand (they often advertise them as "heavy duty"), so it can handle all of your components, including any possible upgrades you might do in the future. As for RAM, I've read that DDR3 is not worth the extra cost unles...

Re: My (perhaps) future pc specs

I almost got that AM3 Black Edition myself earlier this year - very nice indeed & great value. I think that Radeon HD 4670 is about half the speed of the 4850 that I've got - but I've been able to under clock that and still play UT2004 on full settings at 90 fps, so the 4670 might be OK. But I'd...

Re: Nativity Rant

I'm definitely with you on that one - I tried to argue (correctly) that having a tree in your living room was only a very recent addition to Xmas, and I got called a curmudgeon ! So how about suggesting an alternative nativity...like a re-enactment of Monty Python's "Life Of Brian" ? :thum...

"fuel magnets"

lol - I remember those. Or magnetic bracelets for arthritis...

Anyway, it only cost a pound, on special offer, so it was worth a try. I can see it might have some effect if there's electrical interference nearby.

Thanks for the welcome everyone - hope to see you on the euro server for some regular Freon action...

...I'll be the one doing an impression of an ice pop.

Re: Tuesday Nights @ Euro

We had some good Freon matches there - great for us new arrivals.

And we even got up to 8v8 at one point - excellent.

Re: BT Accelerator

Thanks - I thought as much.

And I'm sure "Fibre To The Cabinet" (FTTC) would be a lot better, but I'll believe that if & when it happens :)

BT Accelerator

Has anyone here in the UK tried out a "BT Broadband Accelerator" device (formerly known as a "BT iPlate") ? [it isolates any existing phone extension cabling, to reduce interference...] I installed one myself, but couldn't notice any difference after a week (checked with http://w...

Hi everyone

I've been enjoying UT2004 all over again, on a modern machine, and it's definitely time for revival. (yes, another one!) The FnG euro server, and others too, haven't been so busy in ages so fire it up, and hope to see you there (most nights, 9-11pm GMT). And if anyone wants any advice on getting it ...
