My beeping computer

Postby [FnG] Lazz on Sat Feb 27, 2010 10:49 am

Hi all

Since about december time, my computer has been beeping on startup. I assumed it might be something to do with the cold weather since I've never had anything like this before and it started as soon as the weather went cold.

Here's the thing though, its not the POST beeping, because it beeps when its loading the desktop. It worried me but it wasn't a huge huge concern until yesterday when not only did it beep 2 or 3 times when loading the desktop, but for the following few minutes, it also had a tendancy to beep some of the time during heavy loading (like if i were to load up the firefox browser for the first time and it does the usual thing where it takes 10 seconds to load and the hard drive light is nearly constantly on). Anyone have any ideas?

The only times i ever have had any beeps from my PC ater post it was a temperature warning (in my case a severely clogged CPU fan), have you checked the MB's temperatures when it beep? I could make it go of on demand by simply running a full virus scan.

PS: my temp alarm was a high note followed by a low note

:yeahthat:

Only other thing I can think of, is some mainboards do not like it if your mouse and/or keyboard suddenly become unplugged (or are loose and having intermittnt connection interrupts)

Definitley check the temperautures first though, especialy since you mention that it happens during high load.

Hi all

So today my computer went crazy on startup. Even after I had loaded up the desktop and got maybe 10 beeps, I loaded firefox and during the loading must have got a few.

I took a screencap of my hardware voltages and temperature:

Here's the thing though, I dont know if it is a temperature problem. Im more wondering if its to do with voltages. Heres the thing, my computer only beeps once its booted up and for several minutes afterwards when theres some heavy loading. However, yesterday, several hours after my computer was on, I decided to do some crazy loading to see if I could recreate the beeps. I loaded corel video studio and saved a high definition movie as well as running an antivirus scan, photoshop and bad company 2 (menu screen). No beeps. Later I also played bioshock 2's multiplayer twice and still got to beeps.

Not sure if it helps but my motherboard is a foxconn p35a. Due to the fear of the beeps, Im almost considering just leaving my computer on 24/7.

Sorry for the late reply, but my knowledge of CPU voltages is limited... however those figures do not seem off to me.

I would check connectors to see if anything is loose as I mentioned above. Beyond that, I am out of ideas. :sorry:

I'd say "Just disconnect the PC speaker, and beeping is gone" (that's what I always do with Yaz's PC)

The problem could be a defective temp sensor, which is causing the threshold to go crazy.(like a loose soldering contact, these are very hard to spot)
To check this, disable the CPU temp threshold, additionaly disable the case temp threshold, that way you know if you problem is temp. related.
If not, then check what other thresholds are active in the BIOS(like James mentioned the keyboard) or HDD temp.
When that's not it, you might wanna try disconnecting devices(or disconnect em all, and reconnect one at the time)

Seems that there might be a virus/trojan that is causing the beeping, the solution in the above mention link is not solid, but at least you know what's causing it.

And when that's not working, try looking for the nearest window that opens up easily and size matches your PC :jester:

Im not sure where the beeping is coming from because the beep that is the problem is a different tone of beep that I hear when the computer is doing the POST startup.

I would turn off the thresholds in the motherboard, except for the fact that I dont have a clue how to do it. I checked the other day and the only thing mentioning temperatures in the motherboard was all greyed out.

Differing Tone of the beeps doesn't mean that it's not the mainboard. If you're an old school gamer like I am, than you certainly remember that the "PC Speaker" was an often used sound device in many DOS games. :D

Assuming that you checked the connecters (mouse, keyboard, harddisk, soundcard, etc.) and none of them are loose, the last thing you can try is to monitor the RPM's of your cooling fans... I remember once that a fan I had was damaged and kept dropping its speed down, and the mainboard kept beeping to warn me of this. Beyond that, I can think of nothing else.

Check both though, the cables and the fan speeds.

Have you checked internal devices like extra hard drives, try reconecting them, also RAM sticks, and see if it happens when you take out your wireless card, graphics card etc.
Although, saying that, I'm backing Lambiks window based solution.
